The Tree Commission advises the Office of Physical Plant regarding trees that may need to be removed due to disease or damage, that are to be added as part of new landscaping or that could be lost to construction -- particularly those trees that are, or could become, of great value to the University.

Highlights:

  • Of the more than 14,064 trees on campus, approximentaly 2000 have been identified and inventoried.
  • Of the trees that have been inventoried on the University Park campus, 15 of them have
    a canopy spread of at least 100 feet.
  • There have been 224 American Elms inventoried so far on campus.
  • Of the trees that have been inventoried, 70 of them are at least 100 feet high.
  • Twenty-six trees at Penn State have attained heritage tree status,
    and six tree groves have been selected as heritage groves.
