What's Green at Penn State by Laura Priaino
Penn State is Taking the "Green" Challenge with New Campaign
Penn State is Taking the "Green" Challenge with New Campaign
Penn State is challenging itself to go "green.”
As a part of its "My 20" Campaign, the University is challenging all students, faculty, and staff to reduce their energy consumption and use of natural resources by 20 percent during Earth Week (April 20-26).
A few simple changes in your daily routine can greatly reduce pollution and greenhouse gas emissions at University Park. For example, taking the bus or walking to work for one day when you normally drive to work would count for your 20 percent. Hopefully making a few changes for one week will plant the seeds for new energy-efficient habits.
By going green for one week, whether it is riding a bicycle to campus, turning off computer screens, printing double sided, buying recycled content paper, or turning off unused lights, Penn Staters can do their part to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Small changes made by a large group of people can have a big environmental impact for future generations.
The University is taking on the challenge and is asking Penn Staters to head into environmental battle and take charge of their life. During Earth Week, offices, departments, and student groups can also set up challenges to see who can conserve the most energy, recycle the most, and spread green awareness. The My 20 Challenges are a fun way to teach how to learn environmentally-friendly activities and help the environment.
By visiting www.my20.psu.edu participants can find example challenges and a list of green activities. Visitors can learn more, including personal green stories, and see what others are doing. All campus communities, groups, and offices are encouraged to join in and learn how they can help the environment too.
UC-Davis Director encourages Penn State to ‘Think Differently’
UC-Davis Buildings and Grounds Director Sal Genito spoke to a room full of Penn State employees about thinking differently, acting efficiently, and making olive oil at the second "Forum for the Future."
Student Volunteers Help Penn State Stay Green and Clean
STATERs is a student group that promotes recycling awareness and other green activities on campus. They are best known for passing out blue recycling bags at football games, an activity that helped collect 87 tons of recyclable items last season.
International Day for Biological Diversity
The theme for this year’s International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD) is "Biodiversity and Agriculture." Celebration of the IBD in 2008 seeks to highlight the importance of sustainable agriculture not only to preserve biodiversity, but also to ensure that we will be able to feed the world, maintain agricultural livelihoods, and enhance human well being into the 21st century and beyond.
New Videoconferencing Program Saves Time and Money
Instead of driving across campus, why not hold your meetings right from your office? Thanks to Adobe Connect, Penn State employees can save time, money, and gas by using this new videoconferencing program.
Unplug iPod, Digital Camera, and Cell Phone Chargers When Not in Use.
Why: Chargers consume a small amount of energy anytime they’re plugged in—even if they’re not charging. It might not seem like a lot, but at a school as big as Penn State, it really adds up.
